Cross LA BOHEME with CABARET, throw in a little bit of RENT, and you might almost begin to describe Baz Luhrmann's visually opulent, fast-paced, funny, heartrending MOULIN ROUGE. The film, which premiered as the opener to the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, is a musical set in 1899 Paris at the notorious Montmartre cabaret club, the Moulin Rouge. Directed by Baz Luhrmann (WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET, STRICTLY BALLROOM), the movie stars Nicole Kidman as the high-kicking courtesan, Satine; Ewan McGregor as the sensitive poet, Christian; and John Leguizamo as the flamboyant artist and matchmaker, Toulouse-Lautrec. Luhrmann's use of eclectic lighting and saturated color, the fast zooms and quick cuts of his camera, and his magnificent costumes and sets perfectly capture the excess and freneticism for which the Moulin Rouge was famous. Beautifully led by McGregor and Kidman, the flawless supporting cast brings to life the culture of belle epoque Paris with magical realism. Above all, the anachronistic, energetic contemporary soundtrack is what drives MOULIN ROUGE, with popular songs by L'il Kim, Christina Aguilera, David Bowie, and Beck--as well as Kidman and McGregor adding their own superb vocals.

Hyperkinetic, attention-seeking pop variation on La Bohème and La Traviata that is so over the top it parodies itself; its modern songs cannot carry the weight of emotion piled upon them, though it might have helped to have had a few singers in the cast.
"...Baz Luhrmann displays often amazing resourcefulness as he mixes a multitude of film and song styles to relate his quintessential tale of la vie boheme..."
Boring trash. Nothing more to say, I believed the hype about this film and could stand no more than 15 minutes before switching off in disgust...this was 3 years ago and to this day, it remains the worst film I have ever seen bar none.
Sacre bleu! Thought I was watching a 2 hour Smashing Pumpkins video. Ewan McGregor should definitely stick to his day job; Elton John songs are bad enough, let alone being sung by a tone-deaf Scotsman. I couldn't stop staring at his teeth. Madamoiselle Kidman wasn't much better; her dying heroine routine was like something out of a bad episode of Star Trek. The one where Captain Kirk falls in love with a beautiful but tragic(normally blue)girl and their love can never realise it's true potential because she always ends up bleedin' dying before the end of the episode and he still hasn't managed to get his leg over or even boldly-go-where-no-man-has-gone-before, much to his frustration.
Maybe if I'd known this was a musical I wouldn't have added it to my list- I generally HATE musicals. Typical, as out of the list of films I wanted this one was a snap decision and I only chose it to make the numbers up. Still waiting for Weekend At Bernies to arrive which was my first choice. I only persuaded my boyfiend to watch Moulin Rouge with me on the promise that Nicole Kidman got her baps out. He fell asleep halfway through and I confirmed that yes, he had missed the bap scene and her cuffs did indeed match her collar. Wasted 2 hours of my life on this and am scarred for life as they massacred a perfectly good David Bowie song to boot as well! Three words to describe this film; why? why? why? and PANTS! (sorry I know that's four words but I thought I should put some pants in there somewhere). If you don't generally take any crap in life or suffer fools gladly then don't watch this film. If I could have slapped the television screen I would have.
Baz Luhrmann has been honoured in his native Australia for his contribution to the country's film industry. The Moulin Rouge! moviemaker was handed the Living Legend trophy at the Inside Film Awards on Tuesday night (17Nov09). And the 47 year old was delighted with the honour, telling the audience at Sydney's Luna Park, "This is an industry to be proud of, it's incredibly exciting. We have it, let's not blow it. I think it's an extraordinarily exciting time to be an Australian filmmaker."... Read more
