Mozart and the Whale
By a customer from Reading , 15 Apr 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
Two autistic people met and fall in love. There are some amusing moments along the way and the two lead characters are likeable enough. However its all a bit too 'clean' and unengaging. The leads (particularly the woman) are portrayed as eccentric rather than handicapped/disabled - in others words the obstacles and problems are kind of airbrushed. Although there are references to previous issues and one very dark earlier event its all kept nicely to one side so we can concentrate on the love story. I gather its based on real events but I feel it does an injustice to the actual people as their struggles to adapt into a 'normal' society(where mentioned at all) seem to be minimised and easily overcome.- Was this review helpful to you?

(10)Over the top and exaggerated
By ajrowe (2 reviews) , 07 Jun 2013A bit freaky and exaggerated, kind of refreshing to see a portrayal of Asperger's on screen but felt they overdid it. I mean come on we don't carry round our pets in slings or cover all of our windows with newspaper. The amount of quirks the characters had was too much which distracted constantly from the otherwise nice story.- Was this review helpful to you?

What a .....
By a customer , 26 Feb 2012Not worth getting out at all. What a shame....You would be better looking at an autism website for info on Asberger's. It doesn't do people with asberger's any justice at all!!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Worth a Watch.
By leanneflanagan (3 reviews) from Cardiff , 23 Apr 2010This is a beautiful story - a rom com with a difference. I'm not sure how close this film is to the reality of Asperger's syndrome, but the love and struggles they face seemed realistic and closer to life than most love stories you see. An eye opener for me also, having Aspergers looks exhausting! I felt dizzy and tired just from watching. Some really touching and funny moments...I'm bias when it comes to Josh Hartnett though!!- Was this review helpful to you?

Mozart and the Whale
By shadfabeast (1 review) from Birkenhead , 17 Nov 2009We have people in our family with aspergers syndrome and autism. The condition affects people in many different ways - however there are key elements that lead to a diagnosis that clearly the writer or producers have chosen to ignore so they can concentrate on a bit of good old fashioned 'AHH - Look at the lovely retards and thier funny ways'. Quite an insensitive look at the condition from my perspective and the actors need to read a book about stuff before they go in front of the camera because in some cases it is just embarrasing. If you want to see a film that looks at autism and aspergers in a way that I recognise and respect then watch Snow Cake featuring Sigourney Weaver and Alan Rickman. Here you will find a powerful film made by people who understand the day to day realities of the condition but can still tell a really good story. It's inspiring, moving, dramatic and has twists - a good film thats been overlooked in many respects.- Was this review helpful to you?
