Just about holds it together
By Graham Mason from lincolnshire , 20 Jun 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
If you are hoping to see a funny, classic sports movie (i.e. Caddyshack, Slap Shot, or Bull Durham), you are probably going to find this a bit disappointing. However, it is still a very enjoyable movie. Bernie Mac does what he does best, and that is be funny. He works to make you care for the character and for the most part he is successful. Sex and the City fans will like the fact that 'Mr. Big' (Chris Noth) is in it, but truthfully, he has too little screen time to make his part memorable.
My biggest complaint has to do with the visuals in this movie. It is hard to find actors who can play baseball and probably harder to find baseball players who can act. Mr. Mac seemed uncomfortable swinging the bat. I know this sounds picky, but some who see this movie will know what I mean. At least Kevin Costner in Bull Durham looked like a hitter.- Was this review helpful to you?

Bernie Mac is great in this film, simple storyline but Bernie makes it special. Sad that the great man is no longer with us. Watch it and remember what a fine comedian he was. One to buy/rent for all his fans.- Was this review helpful to you?

not a classic baseball movie
By rav42 (60 reviews) from Romford , 31 Aug 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a classic tale of redemption story, bad sports star learns to be better person. it's not the best of it's type , but it's not the worst either.
Bernie Mac is acceptable but overall it's a weak film.
Stick with the Natural, The Bad News Bears or Major League...or Field of Dreams- Was this review helpful to you?

The King of Comedy Himself - The Mac!
By gullyforth (16 reviews) from Swansea , 26 May 2009I would have given him five stars to read out the phone book for 90 minutes. Gotta love the Mac. Who-you-wid!- Was this review helpful to you?

By nansea (7 reviews) from South Ockendon , 01 Jun 2008Not the best outing for Bernie Mac, but he is funny and makes the film watchable. Good to see Anglea Bassett too. Not the best but its watchable.- Was this review helpful to you?

Poor Bernie Mac Movie
By Leon Blackwood from Newbury Park, Ilford, London , 27 May 2006I think that Bernie Mac could have done something better with this movie but ever since he has left the comedy circuit it looks like he has gone down hill. Shame really as he is good at what he does.- Was this review helpful to you?
