Exquisite film, some moments excruciatingly touching. A picture of an America that we don't see that much but is totally there, of propriety and duty and a luxury that chills. Both characters are so subtly and intelligently portrayed - Mrs Bridge with her childlike inadequacy, Mr Bridge who tries his best to be human but is afraid of it. She is innocent, and it costs her her relationship with her children, her friend, in the end her own adulthood. He is not innocent, but so busy repairing breaches and patrolling the boundaries that it costs him his humanity. A comfortable life, and easier to criticise than admire. I love the books, the film does them full credit. Could Paul Newman be more elegant? Or Joanne Woodward more charming?
