A piece of true cinemagic for young and old alike in the vein of Lemony Snicketts and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this is an amazing blend of mischief, fun and entertainment that just had the whole cinema riveted. Dustin Hoffmann was wonderous as the centuries old eccentric toy shop owner, aided by a lacking in confidence assistant (Natalie Portman), a straight laced 'by the book' accountant and a boy (Zach Mills - again excellent) who finds it difficult to make friends, partly because of his particular liking for hats. It just has all the mad fun and escapist magic that childrens (and olders) films should have and some sadly miss. For us this will be one of those played again films that when it comes to DVD we will end up wearing out the disc far before we ever wear out our enjoyment of the film, yep trust me it is that good. Definately recommended.
My boyfriend and I rented this movie expecting just a nice little story to watch together. However as soon as it started I knew we were in for a treat! We thoroughly enjoyed this movie from start to finish. It was colourful, fun and quite moving actually. It was nice to see Natalie Portman in something different and I liked the quirkiness she brought to her character Mahoney - I empathised with her lack of belief in herself. The little boy who plays Eric was so well chosen for his part he will go far I am sure. I liked the stuffy but likeable accountant as well, he provided the balance to the movie. And Dustin Hoffman was fantastic! It looked like he had a good time making this movie and I liked the character - wacky, funny but worldy at the same time. This movie was all about believing in yourself and those around you. For taking the time to appreciate the different people that are in the world - yes it was a fantasy film, but take a step back and you will see it totally relates to every-day living in some way. Rent it and see for yourself! Enjoy this magical film - I will be buying it and enjoying it for many years to come! :-)
The store is the star in this candy-coloured kids' extravaganza, a whimsical fantasy about a magic toy shop. Natalie Portman does her darndest Audrey Hepburn impression as Molly Mahoney, the manager of said establishment. She seems happy and fulfilled in her work - and who wouldn't be, when all she has to do is open the stock book to conjure up the apple of anybody's eye - but less so at home, where she's blocked on that piano concerto she's been trying to finish for as long as she can...
