A little gem
By film-man (16 reviews) , 21 Feb 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
A superbly cast, well-directed, faithful adaptation of Mervyn Peake's whimsical morality tale. Shot on Sark (the location of the story) the single glaring error was to have some of the characters attempt a Sarkese accent (a kind of Franco-English) which sounds unconvincing. Outside that, the central perfomances are flawless, with Derek Jacobi a perfect Mr. Pye and his supporting players (Judy Parfitt as Miss Dredger, Richard O'Callaghan as Thorpe and the wonderful Betty Marsden as the curmudgeonly Miss George) straight off the pages of the book. An added bonus is Patricia Hayes' splendid comic cameo as Miss Dredger's Albanian servant. The special effects are acceptable for a TV drama of the time. The pace slackens a little in Part 3, but Ken Howard's witty score does much to assist in carrying the story along. On the whole, a sterling effort and something of a little gem.- Was this review helpful to you?
