Adapted from Anne Fine's book Alias Madame Doubtfire, this knowing blend of comedy and common sense is family entertainment par excellence. Aided by Oscar-winning make-up, Robin Williams gives one of the performances of his career as an actor who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny to be close to his children after he splits with wife Sally Field. Director Chris Columbus should be given credit for reining in the Williams exuberance that often overbalances his pictures, while retaining enough of his quick-fire personality to ensure that just about every gag hits its target. Raising the occasional quizzical eyebrow in bewilderment, Pierce Brosnan also does well as the bachelor looking for a ready-made family, but Sally Field overdoes the exasperation and the film's a lot more fun when she's not around. It's a little long and some scenes misfire, notably Williams's routine with the dinosaurs and the resultant TV show, but cracking set pieces, such as the make-up experiments and the series of table-hopping quick changes, more than make amends. No matter how many times you've seen it already, it's worth watching again just for Mara Wilson, playing one of the daughters, who was even more impressive in Danny DeVito's adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda.

If you can accept Williams as a Scotswoman Ð he looks like a truck driver in drag and sounds like Miss Jean Brodie long past her prime Ð there is occasional slapstick amusement to be found in this over-long and sickly sweet comedy.

    Far tetched drivel!

Robin Williams is such a good character actor who is wasted on this sentimental mush. The story line is preposterous and totally unbelievable. It is a film that tries to get laughs out of a very distressing family situation for the kids involved

A classic comedy, Williams at his best.

For those of you who have yet to see Robin Williams dressed in a frock and leggings, I feel very sorry. This film is indeed a classic which will never die. Williams' performance is truly excellent, his masquerade as a woman is as believable as his character and, whilst the general plot of the film seems far fetched, there is a realism which revolves around the characters which will capture the viewer's attention easily. This film is full of quirks, as well as some absolute gold from Williams. True comedy at its best, and, as a bonus, it's very suitable for all - and I mean all - ages. Happy viewing.

    Unconvincing boring slapstick

I do like Robin Williams (and the rest of the cast) and was looking forward to this film. However I found it so boring I fell asleep after about 20 minutes. The 2nd watching didn't go much better but I did get to the end of the film, eventually.

I hate slapstick when it is unbelievable, no-one in their right mind would believe someone could act the way Robin Williams character does, he is stupid & ridiculous. He starts off a fairly normal person with some off the wall tendencies, a bit thoughtless and unreliable, but turns into a complete plonker doing things that are highly illogical. I just kept asking myself 'why would you do that' all the way through the film. Situation humour should come from there being something funny in the situation, not having to manufacture the situation to try and make something funny out of it. Setting aside the fact that Robin Williams looked like a man in drag, pathetic jokes like him setting light to his fake boobs instead of just turning the pan off are just plain irritating. It was awful, suitable only for 2 year olds and slapstick fans who don't care how unbelievable the plot is. I was very disappointed.

Comedy and sentimentality combine to put across social message

Although basically a (very funny) comedy, this film does try to put across the anguish caused to children by marital breakup. That it does so in rather an over-sentimental manner is rescued partially by the denouement (which I won't reveal so as not to spoil it for those yet to view it).

    A very watchable film!

This funny film does try and get laughs out of what is a distressing family crisis, with a father who tries to be friends with his children, leaving all the disciplining and raising to the mother, who, understandably, gets fed up.

However, having said that, this film has to be watched for the simple fact that Robin Williams wears a dress in it, and dispite what the story is about, it is truly halarious!!

I've given this 3 stars as I do think it touches on a sore subject for many people out there, but it is a funny film, which if this subject does not affect you, its fantanstic.
