Much Ado About Nothing
In 1978, the BBC set itself the task of filming all of William Shakespeare's plays for television. The resulting productions, renowned for their loyalty to the text, utilised the best theatrical and television directors and brought great performances from leading contemporary actors. When homecoming warriors Claudio and Benedick turn their attentions to romance, friends, brothers and lovers are all soon found wanting. Claudio quickly becomes engaged to Hero, while Benedick quips and quarrels his way into her cousin Beatrice's heart. But when Claudio is tricked into jilting his fiancee, Benedick is forced to choose between friendship and love... This spirited production of the first of Shakespeare's three great romantic comedies featured some of the favourite names of British television.
