Set in ancient China, this animated musical adventure tells the story of the eponymous heroine, who dons man's clothing and goes to war to save her family honour, because her father's health is failing. Some splendid set pieces, the inevitable love between Mulan and her brave captain, and the often uproarious presence of a snappy little dragon (voiced by Eddie Murphy) are the highlights. Aspects of the story go a bit over young children's heads, but it's an enthralling narrative for everyone else and there's plenty of slapstick fun to keep youngsters happy. All in all, a startling addition to the Disney studio's catalogue.
This is an absolute must for anyone whether you have kids or not (I just use her as an excuse) fantastic colourful animation, hilarious characters and great if a bit predictable story make for a fantastically enchanting film.
Rent this with 'Mulan 2' for a great afternoon in.
Based on an Chinese legend, Mulan is the story of a young girl who rebels against what is expected of her and takes her fathers place in the Chinese army when conscription requires that one man from each family must serve. Right from the begining of the beautiful opening titles, this film is disney at its very best, on a par with classics such as Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.
The characters are surprisingly three-dimensional and you do find that you care what happens next. Both Mulan and Sheng are strong, yet flawed characters and the love story between them is well done, the groundwork of trust and affection being laid without greatly damaging Mulan's masquerade. The comic relief characters also have a little more depth than is usual with much of the humour arising from the awkwardness of Mulan's interaction with the men.
The battle scenes are also done very well and, without anything graphic being shown on screen, the devestation left in the aftermath of war is vividly apparent when Mulan and the others arrive at the pass to find that they are too late.
All in all, while not perfect, this is a film that will entertain children and adults alike and is an excellent way to pass a peaceful couple of hours.
This was wonderful - my 2 year old daughter loved it - I was surprised because it wasn't the usual pink princesses. Wonderful soundtrack with some great songs that will have you singing for weeks. Liked it so much I went and bought it!!

Fantastic animation, great songs, one of the few Disney movies (of recent years) that our entire family enjoyed. Mulan breaks the mold in terms of Disney heroines - finally one that I'm happy for my daughter to emulate. Not a pink dress in sight!
not one of disneys best efforts but amusing at times. The characters are forgetable no real memorable moments. colourful animation as per disneys usual standards but not quite up to scratch with the story.
The heading sums it up really. Eddie Murphy plays the Shrek Donkey again but in the form of a small Dragon this time. Good for kids.
disney what else can you say?
well the original donkey from shrek makes its first outing as a small dragon
the story isnt as good as it couldve been but the animation not as good as previous offerings
.... up to the musical finale. The last minute or so is unbelievably terrible! Ignoring that bit it's worth five stars.
great for the children to watch.it's not bad for the parents either.
pretty to look at with a good soundtrack. Eddie Murphy is the voice talent for a better than average comedy sidekick. Good for boys as well as girls as there is lots of fighting and some martial arts training.
