The Ugly Duckling is given a delightful Down Under spin in this congenial comedy. Here, the figure of fun is flabby Muriel Heslop, who lives in a frothy fantasy world of Abba songs, husband-shopping and wedding-dress dreams. It's when she leaves her small-minded home town of Porpoise Spit under a cloud to flat-share with Rhonda, an old acquaintance from school (snappily played by Rachel Griffiths), that the initially hilarious humour begins to turn a shade more poignant. Breezily directed by the clearly nuptially fixated PJ Hogan — he went on to make My Best Friend's Wedding in the States — the film features a tremendously affecting Toni Collette as mousey no-mark Muriel, who spends her life flicking through bridal catalogues. It took Hogan a year to raise the finance for his movie, and he was rewarded not only at the box office but also by the critics: the movie deservedly scooped four Australian film awards, including best film and best actress for Collette.
"...The film's sunny effervescence will linger....[Mr. Hogan] combines humor and pathos in all his characters, keeping his film nicely off-balance in the process..."
Muriel is a lost soul and we all know how that feels at times. She is stuck with an appauling family. Her mother is a little crazy and sad. Her brother and sister are no-hopers, and her dad is a wanna be politician who has no real interested in his family. Her friends are real backstabbers and treat her appaulingly. That is until she steels her dads cash and takes a holiday of a lifetime.
Everything changes for Muriel and you rejoice with her.
You must watch this if you are a fan of feel-good movies with lots of laughs and a wonderful ABBA soundtrack.
music is brilliant..its a bit sad...very funny and different but i know you will learn to like it if you give it a chance...go on try it and then write a review
Juno star Alison Janney has signed up for two new comedies, according to industry rumours. The Hollywood Reporter says the actress, who is perhaps best known as White House press secretary CJ Cregg in The West Wing, has signed on for British director Sam Mendes' "tentatively-titled" This Must Be The Place, as well as Eddie Murphy's new vehicle A Thousands Words. It will be the second time Janney has worked with Mendes, after she appeared as the distant, downtrodden suburbanite Barbara Read more
