We loved this! My wife's choice and I knew what to expect - but admit this was better than I was anticipating.
I know it may not be everybody's cup of tea, but if you love the rom-com genre and a laugh at a film which can laugh at itself and have a giggle at the 80's music scene then you'll love it too.
Hugh Grant was pretty much cast in character as you'd expect (which isn't a bad thing!), and with Drew Barrymore in support it worked brilliantly. The rest of the supporting cast were very good and there are enough one liners in there to keep the giggles going throughout.
Obviously the romantic twist is there but even then its so tongue in cheek its not too OTT for the blokes! The story's pretty good and it follows all the tried and tested rom-com principles.
Great couples film (or a group of lasses I suppose, not butch enough for us guys alone!) - and if you were a teenager in the 80s and into Wham, Spandau Ballet and the like you'll crease yourself laughing - we did! Enjoy.
With a Hugh Grant film you tend to know what to expect but for this one, after seeing the trailer and reading the plot a few times my wife and I were half expecting a bit of a flop, luckily this was not the case and Music & Lyrics made for a great nights entertainment. Whist still providing plenty of laughs this movie edges slightly further away from the classic Grant comedy and drifts further into the romantic drama genre. Hugh Grant plays Alex Fletcher, has been 80s pop star tasked with writing a hit song for latest teen star Cora, lyrically stunned enlists the help of quirky plant lady Sophie who is played brilliantly by Drew Barrymore. Both lead characters are fully committed to the role, funny throughout yet serious enough for you the viewer to believe in their relationship, it was hard to comprehend how something so silly at times would build so well and by the end we could not believe how gripped we both were. This movie is exactly what it says on the tin, Hugh Grant as you expect, mixed subtly with the US rom-com style of the 90s and pulled together but two enchanting lead characters, some cheesy but catchy music and simple but undeniably sweet story line. Suitable for all and well worth a watch. 8/10. 4 Stars
Hollywood star Drew Barrymore has ruled out starring in any more romantic comedies - because the genre has defined her career for the last decade. The actress admits she has been drawn to lighthearted projects like 2004's 50 First Dates and 2007's Music and Lyrics in the past; but now she's 34, she's looking to branch out and take on more daring movie roles. She's already got one edgy drama under her belt - dark TV movie Grey Gardens - but she's keen to expand her resume. She tells Elle... Read more
