We loved this! My wife's choice and I knew what to expect - but admit this was better than I was anticipating.
I know it may not be everybody's cup of tea, but if you love the rom-com genre and a laugh at a film which can laugh at itself and have a giggle at the 80's music scene then you'll love it too.
Hugh Grant was pretty much cast in character as you'd expect (which isn't a bad thing!), and with Drew Barrymore in support it worked brilliantly. The rest of the supporting cast were very good and there are enough one liners in there to keep the giggles going throughout.
Obviously the romantic twist is there but even then its so tongue in cheek its not too OTT for the blokes! The story's pretty good and it follows all the tried and tested rom-com principles.
Great couples film (or a group of lasses I suppose, not butch enough for us guys alone!) - and if you were a teenager in the 80s and into Wham, Spandau Ballet and the like you'll crease yourself laughing - we did! Enjoy.
Very dull, the best bit was the 80's video for the theme song. I found it hard to stay awake, it wasn't funny, it just plodded along and it was predictable. IMO this is the worst Hugh Grants film. He was ok in it but the rest of the acting and the plot (what plot?) was poor and very boring.
A lot of people had a lot of fun parodying 80s style: and that's the very best thing that can be said about this utterly ghastly film.
Hugh Grant should hang his head in shame and exile himself from society for a decade for being involved in this saccharine dross - this is a film that's so paint-by-numbers cute and so relentlessly sugary that your teeth will start corroding after 20 minutes.
There wasn't a single moment of acting that rang true, everything was a semaphoring embarrassment of cliché and stageyness. if you find this sort of sweetness rewarding, well then you deserve to be as obese as you no doubt are!
The story was weak, the acting was embarassing. I wanted to cringe behind the sofa.
this was a real no brainer watch and a good send up of the one hit wonders that abound. The more times you watched it the better it gets as you pick up little subtle things in the credits.
One for anyone that wants a no heavy plot or viloent films that seem to abound these days. A real must for Christmas

The first few minutes (Huh Grant and his band with a New Romantic 80's look) were more frightening for me than an 18 rated horror - but yes, I suppose we really DID dress like that and buy tthe music.
The film centres on Hugh Grant as a has been star from an 80's group called 'POP', having one last shot, and Drew Barrymore a slightly odd 'normal' girl. The outcome is hilarious and romatic, the Drew and Hugh thing works for me.
All in all there is a hint of Pop-Corn in the film - but the corn is intended and never takes over what is for me a brilliant rom-com. I would definately recommend this.... also, if anyone has the soundtrack... I can dust off my disco ball and a frilly blouse...
I'm sorry folks but Hugh Grant can't act. He's an idiot. Does he intentionally portray the same character in all his rather mediocre films - i.e. a middle-class foppish prat? Don't waste your money on this film - or any of his films for that matter. I'd rather have all my limbs surgically removed without the benefit of anaesthetic rather than watch a film with this egotistical non-entity in it.
A nice Sunday afternoon spent at the cinema.
Nothing too taxing for your brain in this movie as Hugh Grant plays himself (yet again), as a has-been 80s pop star with some appalling dance moves, and Drew Barrymore plays a dizzy, yet surprisingly intelligent (yet again) plant attendant (what the heck else would you call her?) who accidentally becomes his lyricist.
The 80s pop video of the band Pop is probably the funniest bit of the movie, although the Shakira wannabee Cora is also brilliantly funny with her 'steamy and sticky' dance moves.
On the whole, it was generally quite funny and very pleasant to watch.
Just don't expect anything special!
I did not expect much from this film as I am not a fan of Grant or Barrymore and went to see it only when the other films in the cinema were sold out. But it had me laughing out loud all the way through. Must see.
This was quite a good couple film as my wife does not like most of the films I get. Drew is still looking amazing, as I pointed out many times. The story line is predictable but good. A nice easy watch.
I absolutely love this film - it is funny, has a good story and some really great songs.
Especially the main song (Way Back Into Love) - the music is absolutely fantastic - and I couldn't believe that the actors actually sing. They are really good!
If you are looking for a nice, easy-to-understand, romantic comedy - you have found the perfect film.
Highly recommended!
I found this movie hilarious... Hugh Grant as an 80's popstar is just too funny. From the gyrating hip movements, Hugh singing(!), to the plain truth of being a 'has-been' in the music industry, it's a cool movie. Drew Barrymore plays the unexpected lyricist and love-interest. The chemistry is ok. If you're not looking to take things too seriously, this movie is great for a few laughs.
