    [Highly rated reviewer]

After his critically acclaimed debut, Funny Ha Ha, it is pleasing to see that Andrew Bujalksi has not shifted dramatically from his naturalistic filmmaking style. It is certainly hipper however, a bit more like Cassavetes' Shadows, shot in black and white in Brooklyn and drifting in and out of the music scene.

Like his first film it's not immediately accessible, mainly because it doesn't feel like any other film currently out there, but it draws you in and leaves you wanting more.

Bujalksi has a knack for capturing those moments in our lives that we might remember, or we might not. His films start and end without a fanfare or a dramatic thunderbolt. They're just there and then they're over and they're gone. And you wonder what just happened. It's like being a fly on the wall in your own life. Bujalski has a knack for capturing the fleeting attractions between people which threaten to evolve into something but never do. It turns out it wasn't such a big deal even though it felt like it at the time. The moment passes and we get on with our lives. Maybe we'll look back one day and think - what if? Or maybe we'll just forget the whole thing.

  • Self indulgent arthouse dross...

I have been an avid moviegoer and fan for over thirty years and have sat through some bad films in my time. The common denominator being that I have always allowed the director the respect of my time, for the full length of the film before making my final judgement. This film is the only one which has broken this record in that I managed around 32 minutes of this dross before hitting the eject button and watching something else. Do not watch this film. It is not big and it is not clever. It is arthoue at its worse and mixed with everything you ever hated about reality tv. The charcters are unlikeable, the story is nonxistent, the director has dissapeared up into himself with such egotistically self delusional denial that the glowing reviews that appear here can only be likened to those who cheered and waved when the emporer showed off his new clothes.

  • A likeable conversation piece

There may not be much of an audience for films that are high on talk and low on action. For me, it's just a relief to find that the USA produces some alternative cinema to Hollywood blockbusters (which are fine in their place). This is rather a youth movie and yet it appealed to an 'oldie' like me, so the director must be doing something right. Although not much happens the acting seems true to these characters' lives which come across as somehow missing a central core; they seem detached and a bit confused as if modern American life has left them adrift. They spend quite a lot of time lazying about chating on beds/divans/chaises. They seem to have problems with intimacy. Oddly, I found this made me smile, though with a sense of sadness. If you like the films of Eric Rohmer you will probably enjoy this look at the concerns of a group of young Americans.

What a tedious load of tripe. I struggle to stay awake or pay attention to the rubbish in this film. What was it all about and what did it achieve? I know I am not of this age group but dear me, this film is a load of rubbish in every way - bad story, badly acted, etc. I would give it 0 stars if I could!

I loved this film for the first half hour. I thought the characters were smart, funny and ever so likeable.

If you want to know how nice they are, one of the characters suggests she and her boyfriend start snorting cocaine; not because she craves the excitement and danger of a drug fuelled life, but because she'd heard it motivates people to do more housework.

I wanted to hang out with these people. At around 45 mniutes I started to get a little irritated because nobody seemed to be doing anything. By the time an hour was up I realized that there was going to be absolutely no story arc and nothing even vaguely approaching dramatic tension. By the time it was over I was bored and grateful these people aren't my friends.
