Martin has two best friends, Patrick and Carl, who couldn't be more different. One is an irresponsible, unreliable, feckless womaniser, and the other is dead. Guess which one slept with his wife? Martin Grantham is happily married to Jen. They have a son Dan, a nice house, the works. One day his best friend Carl throws himself under a train, setting off a disastrous sequence of events that will change Martin's life forever... Into this mess steps Patrick, a friend from way back. Patrick is everything Martin is not - glib, self-confident, popular and pathologically immature. He's the last person Martin needs in his life right now. Or is he? It's not a matter of life and death; it's much funnier than that.

Mutual Friends is another of those programmes that completely passed me by on telly. How did that happen? As soon as I saw it advertised I thought, Alexander Armstrong? Keeley Hawes? Sarah Alexander? Brilliant! Luckily this is a series that delivers and does not just line up the names.
Marc Warren plays Martin, a bit of a loser, a wet blanket, who has two best friends. For the first 3 minutes of episode 1 that is, as one of his best friends commits suicide. That one also happened to have a bit of an affair with Martin's wife, played by the brilliant Keely Hawes. So Martin is left with his other best friend, Patrick, portrayed as a hopeless womaniser by an equally superb Alexander Armstrong. Patrick could give David Duchovny's Hank Moody a good run for his money, both appear to be self-centred and care-free when really they still love the one that got away.
There are other friends and characters around as well, from Leigh, the pretty bonkers widow, to Martin's boss, Sarah, a cold sly candidate and a surprising turn for My Hero's Emily Joyce. The cast describe the style of the series as 'Dromedy' (Drama/Comedy to you and me) and the feel is very similar to Californication- laugh out loud scenes sit comfortably with emotional moments. Think Coupling on a bigger scale with less slapstick.
Quirky, cringey, funny and warm- this is the BBC at its best.
