Toula Portakalos (Nia Vardalos) feels trapped in her large Greek family, where women are expected to do only three things: "marry Greek men, have Greek babies, and feed everyone until the day they die." Rebelling against this fate, Toula quits the family restaurant, goes to college, fixes her hair, and falls in love with Ian (John Corbett), a guy who is way-too-good-to-be-true, and not Greek. This horrifies Toula's Greek culture-crazed father (Michael Constantine) and sets off a major culture clash between her loud, eccentric family (whose activities include roasting whole lambs on the front-yard barbecue spit) and Ian's subdued, overcivilized Anglo-Saxon parents.
Based on Vardalos' own autobiographical one-woman play, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING is that rare romantic comedy that has the courage to trust its simple, human story and not resort to overwrought Hollywood sentimentality and phoney glamour (all the characters in the film look and act like real people). It's also filled with big, fat, crowd-pleasing laughs, making it a wedding most worth attending. Co-produced by Tom Hanks, the movie is set in Chicago, but was filmed in Toronto. The spirited cast includes Lainie Kazan and Andrea Martin (of SCTV fame) as Toula's mom and aunt.

The unheralded success story of 2002, this perky, low-budget romantic comedy — adapted by star Nia Vardalos from her autobiographical one-woman stage show — has now accumulated over $240m in the US alone. Vardalos shines as a frumpy waitress at her Greek family's restaurant who goes against her father's traditionalist views when she finds a new job, gets a confidence-boosting makeover and hooks handsome American teacher John Corbett (of Sex and the City fame). While the happy couple-to-be — who share charming screen chemistry — are played relatively straight, Vardalos's in-your-face relatives are a source of buoyant comic vitality, played to the hilt by a delightful cast. Although there are no real surprises on the way to the chaotic event of the title, the whole enterprise is swept along with such unforced affection, humour and exuberance that any initial resistance to the fairy-tale plot is quickly forgotten. Incidentally, Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson (of Greek parentage herself), co-produced.
Warm and lively comedy that is just saved from its reliance on stereotyped characters and situations by its generous humanity.
If you have a Greek family you'll laugh like a drain. If not, I suspect some of the funnies will be lost on you. Enjoyable even for non Greeks though.
Sparkling romantic comedy about a young woman who is from Greece now living in the USA. Witty dialogues and insightful characterizations make this comedy a good choice for a relaxing evening in front of the tv box.
