In this comedy, Joe Pesci plays the Vinny of the title, an extremely inept lawyer (who has never tried a case in court), who comes to the rescue of his young cousin (Ralph Macchio) when the lad runs into a bit of trouble with the law in the Deep South. Pesci has great fun with his role — a huge departure from his Oscar-winning turn as a gangster in GoodFellas — but the biggest surprise is Marisa Tomei, who plays his coarse Brooklyn girlfriend. Although she's great in what was her first major role, there was widespread surprise when she walked off with the best supporting actress Oscar, beating three British nominees, including Miranda Richardson for her role in Damage.

  • "...PESCI's performance in MY COUSIN VINNY is something of a triumph....Tomei is so good at playing this svelte sharpie that she commandeers the screen whenever she's around..."

    Desert Island Disc Choice

I have worn out my VHS copy of this film and sadly I had to give it a decent burial, after long and faithful service.

The 3 main stars excelled themselves in this witty, well-paced story. Mr Pesci and Mr Gwynne are well-known to me, but Miss Tomei was a delightful discovery. I am not in the least surprised that she waltzed off with the award for Best Supporting Actress.

The superb script, which was sharp, pithy and funny, was excellently delivered by all. Indeed, every one of the characters was drawn with meticullous and exquisite care, and each actor played his/her part to perfection.

There is not one thing about this film which disappoints me. It has been, since my first viewing, and remains after several score of watchings, one of my personal favourites - one I would want to take onto that desert island which mysteriously has a DVD player and the necessary electricity in place.

Executives at 20th Century Fox have launched a multi-million dollar lawsuit against Bollywood filmmakers - accusing them of remaking 1992 film My Cousin Vinny without permission. Fox bosses have filed a £1.3 million claim at India's Bombay High Court accusing officials at BR Films of producing an illegal remake of the Oscar-winning movie. The legal papers state that BR Films had been granted permission to make a film based on the idea of the U.S. film - but rights for a Hindi-language... Read more
