Really charming
By Fiona Tubbs from Stroud, England , 23 Jul 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
I didn't know about the Durrells' history but was this did not effect my enjoyment of this film.
It is perhaps a little chaotic in its construction and storyline, but this is intentional as it reflects the family's own situation.
Imelda Staunton was great as the slightly put upon matriarch of a diverse family and hundreds of animals. She has to put up with her children's obsessions with writing and eccentric 30s friends, shooting to hunt for food and burglars, unsuitable suitors and animals.
There is also a lovely performance by Omid Djallii as the adopted island friend.
At the heart of the film is the relationship between family and friends and allowing people to pursue passions for the greater education in life.- Was this review helpful to you?

(2)Wonderful
By Trionon (103 reviews) from London , 21 Aug 2008Warm and funny and slightly nostalgic, in fact I've acquired a copy for my collection along with the 1987 version, this is actually one of the rare examples when a short adaptation works just as well.- Was this review helpful to you?
