A powerful yet understated film about the conflict between family and religion. Great performances from the 3 main actors and a moving soundtrack.

Beautifully filmed, with a sensitive soundtrack, this film is breathtakingly simple but emotionally devastating. A n Orthodox rabbi finds that there is a conflict between his love for his son, and his love for his God.

On a trip to the Dead Sea, after swimming , the rabbi and the other men leave for afternoon prayers, but he abandons his son, who drowns. His wife cannot forgive him for this, and the lives of these two people are torn apart.

The film is not polemical, not a diatribe against religion, that is what gives it enormous power. Rather, it looks sympathetically at Orthodox culture, but asks whether there is a fundamental conflict between religious devotion and the love of family, or normal emotions full stop.

Although fairly short, understated and simple this is a powerful movie.

An examination of the levels to which some people are devoted to their faith, even when this inadvertently leads to personal tragedy, this film is thought provoking.

The performances from the three leads, particularly the mother and father are strong and enhance what is a pared down script and setting. I thoroughly recommend.
