No happy ending
By Simon Rust from Kent , 04 May 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
An extremely emotional film in the mold of Love Story or Kramer verses Kramer. Some amusing moments too. A truly excellent film if you like this genre.- Was this review helpful to you?

(7)Half a good film
By Cato (705 reviews) from Lydbury North , 20 Nov 2009A film which started out great and finished pretty woefully. Almost half way through it changed from being a likeable story about a a clash of cultures between young and old, offbeat and square, gothwear and flannels, to a sentimental sugar coated schmalzy return to old American Hollywood ways. Even the score changed from contemporary to old fashioned orchestral music which wouldn't have been out of place in any film from the last fifty years. A disappointment, but there was no questioning the quality of the acting, particularly from Leelee Sobieski as the disaffected youth magically transformed into the square older woman. It looks like the director and screen writer suffered from a crisis of confidence in this one and succumbed to a weak resolution. A pity.- Was this review helpful to you?

Pure Pleasure
By Pierre Henri Brismail from York, England , 04 Nov 2005Watching this well crafted film was a visual delight and a lifting experience. The casting, the photography, the acting, the script and the directing are all perfect. Even the somewhat improbable story line is made believable. Watch this film and be transformed!- Was this review helpful to you?

Life can be wonderful!!
By Mark Radford from Near Worksop, England , 21 Apr 2005The opening scenes with narration almost got me to switch off but I preserved and got into what was a good movie. Two people, a teenage girl and a middle aged man both alone in their own world strike up a friendship and begin a journey of self discovery. This leads them and us the viewers to understand that nobody needs to be alone in life!! When Albert Brooks character ends up in hospital and finds he's dying, the movie plays more on emotion and it pays off very well, to gauge the feelings of the characters and those around them. Well worth watching!!- Was this review helpful to you?

excellent cinematography
By Welland Palmer from Reading, England , 01 Sep 2004This is the first feature length film directed by Christine Lahti(better known for her acting). The cinematographer was given full rein which has resulted in some gorgeous photography, particularly in the opening sequences. The plot dragged a little in the middle but the resolution was satisfying. A low budget film in which all the stops have been pulled out. Lahti won an Oscar for a short film that she directed earlier in her career. The acting is excellent and the film steers clear of mawkishness or sentimentality which is quite a feat given the film's subject matter.- Was this review helpful to you?
