Herzog and Lynch - it's got to be wierd!
By JimmyTwoTimes (2 reviews) from Birmingham , 13 Sep 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
If you like Herzog films then you're likely to like this!
It's essentially the strange story of a San Diego man who goes postal after a kayaking holiday with friends in Peru - the result being matricide with a massive sword.
The story (loosly based upon true events), unfolds in real time with flash backs to the events leading up to the murder.
Strong performances by Willem Defoe and Chloe Sevigny make the film very watchable, but Michael Shannons performance as the giant mentalist really provides the best bits of the film. All in all the performances are very watchable.
Herzog aparently struggled with the digital cameras used to shoot the film but he still captures some iconic visual scenes.
There's a Lynch style dark undertone that brings a grittiness to the film.
If you like Herzog and Lynch then give it a go - if not you might be best to stay away.- Was this review helpful to you?

(23)Great are only the names - boils down to verrry little
By Sybilisation (57 reviews) from London , 04 Mar 2012It started out OK, nice pictures, excellent actors, but already after 20mins or so it started to get boring - no real story (had already been told in the first 5 mins or so,) with sometimes strange flashbacks, (at least to me) unpleasant pieces from the play as well as music that was grating on my nerves, coming up more and more often, I found the film more and more unbearable.
When you've got a name, does it give you the power to sell anything? Am I supposed to find this film good, deep and whatever else because of the names linked to it? (Makes me think of the Emperors New Clothes...)
If someone unknown had made this film with lesser known actors, would people see this film for what it is? No, I can't even say what it is. What it seems to be to me is very little substance, the whole 'fluff' boils down to a story that can be told in one short sentence: Confused son kills his mother who seems to be at the root of his confusion.- Was this review helpful to you?

Certainly not for un-demanding drones
By IJMC (19 reviews) , 14 Jan 2012I think people are missing the point with this film.
Fans of Herzog or people who are trying to become a little more open minded with the possibilities that filmmaking gives to filmmakers and audiences should take into consideration that a film does not always need to be fully understood or contain a translucent narrative.
Even some of my friends who are very big Herzog fans brush this one under the carpet, but I think it was his best film of that year. Some of the images are totally original and the dialogue truly great, not to mention some of the bizarre scenes containing midgets, flamingos, or gigantic birds that sometimes make you feel as if you and everybody outside of Brad's mind are the insane ones... I digress.
It's all down to personal preference, but it's a bit of a shame that most people aren't willing to except that filmmakers or the films themselves should have room for experimentation. But, can definitely understand that this is not a film for everyone, just feel it deserves A LOT more credit than what it has been given.- Was this review helpful to you?

Weird and boring
By Schnecker (15 reviews) from Sunderland , 23 Jun 2011Very weird, especially as it is loosely based on a true event.I must admit i thought having William Defoe in would make it worthwhile.Yeah i was wrong,he not really in many scene's,all in all basically a weird film- Was this review helpful to you?

Utter Tosh
By Minny (567 reviews) from London , 20 Jun 2011I never thought the word tosh and Werner Herzog would go together but this is an exception. It was dull and boring. I should have known really as I have never ever seen Willam Defoe appear in any decent film. This was an utter disappointment .- Was this review helpful to you?
