  • So bad it's become a legend

An adaptation of one of Gore Vidal's most famous books, starring a host of A-listers of the time including Raquel Welch in the title role. This film is so bad (both Gore and Raquel have gone on record stating it was a mistake ever making it) that you really have to see it! It's an exercise in "how not to" and, therefore, makes it all the more fascinating!

One you'll never ever want to own (or see again) but which you should really see anyway.

  • Disaster movie

Some of the reasons why this film turned into a dog's breakfast

can be found in the commentaries of Sarne and Welch. For example, Sarne hated the novel, didn't understand it, and didn't even want to direct the film. Raquel comments that she got no direction from Sarne. Raquel's comments about Mae West are priceless. Mae West had total freedom to write her own script, and it shows. Consequently the film is confusing and incoherent Only Raquel stands out here, both for some decent acting and sheer magnetism. Watch out for a very young Farah Fawcett and first role for Tom Selleck.

Horrible film made by disturbed people. Couldn`t even recommed for its 'trash' factor, there is nothing to like about this at all. Unmitigated dross !

Ahead of its time and yet of its time, this cheeky sureal commedy may be a bit of a mess, but what a scream. If for no other reason watch it for May West in the cabaret scene.

Perhaps I ought to have rated this 1 star, as this is one hell of a mess of a movie. However, it is so messed up it has to be seen, if only for Raquel Welch's extraordinary performance as Myra. The story makes hardly any linear sense, but Ms Welch brings huge amounts of sheer animal sex to her role that she grips in all senses from start to finish.

Apparently a 'satire' (now 'Catch 22' is a satire!), I wouldn't know as I didn't have the foggiest what the film was all about! Disowned by Gore Vidal (he didn't like 'Caligula' either), the disc presents both the original version and a 'director's cut' - I watched the latter. Rex Reed goes under the knife and emerges as Raquel Welch, who takes herself off to Hollywood to seduce Roger Herren and the late Farrah Fawcett, whilst John Huston and Mae West look on. Notorious for the sexual innuendo (mostly from the aged Mae West) and 'male' rape scene, it hasn't aged well and ruined a few careers in the process. Avoid, unless you want to savour it's curiosity value (what little there is of it)...
