Ice hockey forms the backbone of this likeable comedy. The remote town of Mystery makes the headlines thanks to its passion for the game, prompting a sports network to arrange a challenge between the locals and a major league team from New York. There are plenty of laughs, but the tale loses its way under a welter of characters and subplots; it's no surprise to find that one of the writers is David E Kelley, creator of TV's Ally McBeal. Compensation comes courtesy of the excellent cast, headed by Russell Crowe and featuring the likes of Burt Reynolds, Colm Meaney and Maury Chaykin in support. There's even a cameo from Mike Myers as a TV commentator.

It's Mighty Ducks! With Russell Crowe!

In this, a grown up version of Mighty Ducks, the only truly astounding thing is that such an array of talent could conspire to make such a cliched, Hollywood-ending, average film.

From director (Jay Roach - Austin Powers, Meet The Parents) to actors (Russell Crowe, Hank Azaria, Burt Reynolds) and even writer (David E.Kelley, who created Ally McBeal amongst other things) everyone here is of the highest calibre - so why is it then that Mystery, Alaska is just that - a mystery of film-making?

Essentially, the story is thus - the small town of Mystery, Alaska lives for hockey. Since there is no one to play but themselves, they have their own version of the big leagues, the Saturday game. In this game, the best players play against each other, and that's the whole thing. Apparently, despite playing every week with the same players, and the fact that its freezing cold, the whole town turns up to watch. Blockbuster Video, I have an idea for a place for a store...

Well, one day, a man from the town who has moved on to better things comes back as the face of big business, and brings with him the mighty New York Rangers. Of course there is a game - but surely little town USA doesn't stand a chance?

The film was entertaining enough. Unfortunately, the script was abysmal, swining from dramatic to comedic too frequently and randomly, which left it looking like a Laurel and Hardy sketch directed by Frank Capra.

Like I said, its worth seeing just to note how fat and hairy Russell Crowe was before Gladiator, and for hearing Michael McKean's combination swearing, which has to be heard to be belived.
