[Highly rated reviewer]this dvd boxset is superb. the head investigator of the NCIS team, is Special Agent LeRoy Jethro Gibbs, who is played by Mark Harmon, he was a gunnery sergeant (gunnie), and ex- sniper in the Marine Core.
Catlin Todd (Cate), who joins at the beginning of the series, enables the writers to explain the intricacies of NAVY protocol to us, as she learns from Jethro and Tony. She is a grounded character, and with a background as a bodyguard to the president , is very capable of handling herself, both with the criminals and tony's advances.
Tony Dinozzo, is an established member of NCIS when the series begins, he has an enjoyable relationship with jethro, who is something of a mentor and disciplinarian to him, but stands on his own two feet, for his undisputed capability, despite a somewhat juvenile sense of humour and pursuit of women.
Dr. Donald Mallard also known as Ducky, is played by the wonderful David MaCallum, he is the NCIS pathologist, medical examiner and coroner. His character is english, and loves to tell a story or two, from his long medical career, and University days. he is endearingly sweet, and despite the gruesome circumstances, where you usually encounter him, usually to be found up to his elbows, in some poor soul, as he talks to the dead, and cares for his 96 year old mother, who has Altzeimers, he is a wonderfully appealing character.
The Other major character, is the goth lab technician Abby. she is always amusing in her scenes, as she brings life and humour, into a job that has been portrayed in rather a dull light in other shows.
Abby's outfits are fabulous. in fact Abby is a real sweetheart, who brooks no argument about her science, knows what to test and why, and always comes through for the team. Gibbs is very fond of her.
This show is a fine blend of forensics, clever plots, action and gentle humour.
The plots are full of twists and turns, you get enough laboratory and autopsy scenes, to engage your interest in the story, to follow the investigating leads with the team. The chemistry between all the actors is completely believable, the teasing, the banter, the infighting, the politics, and their individual private life storylines.
this series is well worth renting out.

MMMBy Dave the Hammer from Stoke on Trent , 08 Aug 2007Whilst NCIS has got the makings of a reasonable programme, have to say it was a bit to 'aren't we all very clever' and in particular too quirky with the punky pathologist and witty agent which after half a dozen episodes just became annoying.
I found in the end I didn't really care what happened, never a good sign!

An addictive show, whos characters are the main source of entertainment.By Thomas Powley from Somerset, England , 29 May 2007Series 1 of the NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service) series, a spin off from JAG but far more compelling and the characters really make for great viewing. The stories and suspense make for great viewing. The episodes are shot is very clean and well thought out way, no shaky cameras and they have a very high production feel about them. The character interactions is what makes make the show, they all interact in different ways to each other, although it is a serious show the underling personalities will make you laugh and in doing so make the show quite humorous, although there never really seem to be any obvious jokes
Agent Gibbs leads a team of experts. He is a strong leader and is always keeping his team in check; he will push them to get results and does not like any one of his team messing around. When he spends his spare time away from work which does not seem to be too often, to relax he builds a boat in his basement, of all places, I cant see how he will manage to get it out.
Dinozzo, a detective who some how manages to wind Gibbs the wrong way, but also has a hap hazard approach is able to piece together the crimes commented. Dinozzo likes women very much but for some reason he just has not got the right approach. Gibbs is always smacking Dinozzo around the back of his head every time he seems to be getting too big for his boot which always makes me laugh.
Abby, a genius goth forensic scientist whos sometimes self doubt is unjust. She sees Gibbs as a father type figure. She seems to have the attention of the rest of the team, which she uses to her advantage.
Doc Ducky a medical examiner whos seems more comfortable with the dead then with living people. He keeps Gibbs on the right track, someone who Gibbs really only seems to trust and find dependable.
Special Agent Caitlin 'Kate' Joins the team when she meets with NCIS on an investigation to stop some form of attack on the president plane. A strong character who can hold her own especially when Dinozzo can be slightly chauvinist towards her.
During the first season McGee joined the team; he is the expert on computers and has a complete crush on Abby. He always seem to look out of depth and Dinozzo plays on this big time although McGee is sometime more than a match for Dinozzo but never seems to show it.
Well worth watching, an addictive show whos characters are the main source of entertainment along with good story lines that can keep you guessing to the last minute.

A great seriesBy DAVID DAVIES from West Sussex, England , 25 May 2007When i first came across NCIS i was expecting another clone of CSI but i was greatly surprised.
Firstly the characters were more human, there was comedy, respect, authority and yet a great sense of realism about them. After just one episode i felt as if these were real people. The character building was done in such a way that you had no choice but to be captivated but the subtle mannerisms and interaction between them. These are people i look forward to spending the remainder of the series with.
Having seen Jag this spin off series seems to have become a rare improvement over its parent show.
WONDERFULBy Jeannette from Barking, England , 04 May 2007if you want intrique - puzzles and some humour then this is the right bunch.
It has the investigations, like CSI, it has the chasing down the suspects, like any cop series, and it has the humour between the characters of the team.
Who could ask for more.
