The team behind Airplane! first turned their wicked talents on to the police force with the short-lived cult TV series Police Squad!, but it was this hilarious feature-length spoof that introduced Leslie Nielsen's inspired Frank Drebin to a worldwide audience. Nielsen remains wonderfully stone-faced as the inept lieutenant, who wreaks havoc in Los Angeles while investigating the shooting of a colleague around the time of a visit by the Queen. The supporting players — George Kennedy as his captain, Priscilla Presley as the equally clumsy love interest and OJ Simpson as the wounded colleague — are also delightfully deadpan, and the determinedly juvenile gags never stop flowing.

Sight-gags and deadpan humour at its finest

A movie length version of the short-lived US TV series 'Police Squad', this is the 'Airplane' team's take on the cop thriller genre.

Sight-gags all over the place rewards repeat viewing. Leslie Neilson is superb as the jaw-droppingly dim and insensitive Frank Drebbin. Ricardo Montalban is excellent as well. Even OJ Simpson is funny (!).

The short length means that it's just one joke after another (and some simultaneously!). Outstanding.

This Sporting Life: What Happens When Sports Heroes Act Up?

This Sporting Life: What Happens When Sports Heroes Act Up? Eric Cantona and Ken Loach. These are not names you would immediately put together. One is a multi-millionaire (surely?) ex footballer, revered by millons of fans; and French. The other is a proud socialist from middle-England (Nuneaton), who has rejected the big money offers; his films are admired but by a relatively small number of committed film buffs. What's more, Ken Loach is a dedicated supporter of Bath FC. I'm guessing there... Read more
