In this dark and witty fable, Nanny McPhee (a person of an unsettling appearance and magical powers) enters the household of the recently widowed Mr. Brown and attempts to tame his seven exceedingly ill-behaved children. The children, led by the oldest boy Simon, have managed to drive away 17 previous nannies and are certain that they will have no trouble with this one. But as Nanny McPhee takes control, they begin to notice that their vile behavior now leads swiftly and magically to rather startling consequences. Her influence also extends to the family's deeper problems, including Mr. Brown's sudden and seemingly inexplicable attempts to find a new wife; an announcement by the domineering Aunt Adelaide that she intends to take one of the children away; and the sad and secret longings of their scullery maid, Evangeline. As the children's behavior begins to change, Nanny McPhee's arresting face and frame appear to change as well, creating even more questions about this mysterious stranger whom the children and their father have come to love.

A slice of family fun that I guarantee your kids will think is simply magic
A wonderful magical movie. A new classic for all the family. I loved it.
This film was excellent, I would recommend anyone going to see this. It was a bit scary in places but Emma Thompson played Nanny McPhee very well. Best film I've seen in ages, with a fairy tale ending.
Do you know something? When eating Chinese food I always got filled up rather quickly. But by the time I got home I was hungry again. No other food did this to me. Funny that. And now I have found the cinematic equivalent in Nanny Mcphee. Yes Emma Thompson underplays this role very well. Yes the gothic style is a joy. And yes, Simon, played by that sweet little lad from Love Actually [you know him... he's the one who loses his Mum and won't talk to his Dad and also has fallen in love with his singing classmate], is suitably rebellious with a cause. But yet there is something lacking about this film (and its not the lack of depth to Colin Firth's character). And it has taken a few days to realise what it is. It is just too blinkin nice for its own good. Children's horror, even mock horror, ought to have an edge. Twas ever thus. Ask Grandma in the Hansel and Gretel story whether this is a sweet bedtime story. Did the wolf live happily ever after when Little Red Riding Hood came to visit? Of course not. So why should we or any child (since this film was clearly intended for that hard to please audience) be satisified with this feel good, feel empty film-ending? Well we are not. Bah Humbug. I wanted something more realistic, more horrid, well... just more. And this film left me feeling like I had eaten a Chinese meal 2 hours ago.
Emma Thompson will be getting up to her old tricks in a sequel to hit 2006 family film Nanny Mcphee. The Oscar winner will star, produce and write the screenplay for Nanny McPhee & the Big Bang, based on the Nurse Matilda books by Christianna Brand. According to Variety, the sequel will also feature Dame Maggie Smith, Rhys Ifans, Maggie Gyllenhaal and The Boy in The Striped Pajamas star Asa Butterfield. Ralph Fiennes is also in negotiations for an uncredited cameo. In the original film,... Read more
