This film is a tremendous eye-opener. Although one should take into account that it is cinema and hindsight can distort, this film tries to offer different sides of the reality of living in Nazi Germany and the education they tried to invoke on the children. Imagine that you are a child and you want to belong, what line of truth would you pursue? Which side do you feel in your heart of hearts is the one for you and at what cost? Yes, there is a small love story and homophobes should stay away, but it is not the main issue. The love of country, Fuhrer, and the Nazi machine is forced to replace indivdual thought, action, and love. It is a powerful idea and looks at the unfairness and unnaturalness of the Nazi beliefs and how their extremism led them to failure and the destruction of so many young lives. Looking for metaphors? Definitely there on so many levels, but equally you can enjoy this one without too much analysis. If you love cinema see this one. Not quite on the scale of Brokeback Mountain, but a cinematic equal none the less.

  • An excellent watch

    Rated - 4.5 stars

This was a great watch, really great story and some great acting. The story centres around a young mans dreams and aspirations and his 'blinkered' view of life, until he meets a sensitive soul who causes him to question his entire life, and what he though he stood for. Set against a grim wartime backdrop, this film takes the viewer on a sometimes difficult emotional journey, and explores themes of friendship, loyalty and expectations, but at the end of the film leaves you feeling somehow uplifted!

looks are not everything in a film, well made and acted but the story if you could call it that let ithis film down, within the first 20mins the story is made clear and for the rest of the film it just tries to ram it home but never seems to quite get anywhere,

Silly me-what no southern Italian drama?

Seriously: an excellent film full of metaphors about not just the Nazi era but about all 'democratic' and not so 'democratic' regimes. Where does this elite school with its ethos and routine differ at all from Eton, Gordonston or any of your special schools in Russia?

A first class story line: you can feel the end piece (similar to The Lonliness of the Long-Distance Runner) with its value rejection approaching well before it actually hits the viewer.

    Good acting and direction throughout.

    May inadvertently contain minor spoiler.
