Narrow Margin

A woman on a blind date (Anne Archer) has her life thrown into confusion and danger when her escort is slain by mob thugs. As the key witness to the murder, she becomes the responsibility of Robert Caulfield (Gene Hackman), a Los Angeles D.A., who travels to remote Canadian cabin to protect her so she can testify against the hit men. Things go awry when a fellow cop gets killed, and the woman and the D.A. both find themselves on the run on a Vancouver-bound train, hurtling through the Rockies, with the mob on their tail.

Gene Hackman stars as the assistant district attorney who faces a nightmarish train journey when he escorts a key witness (Anne Archer) to a Mob trial in this efficient remake of Richard Fleischer's cracking 1950s B-movie. Director Peter Hyams doesn't bring anything particularly new or innovative to his update, but the cat-and-mouse games between Hackman and chief assassin James B Sikking are a delight, and the action sequences on the roof of the speeding train are exhilaratingly shot. Look out for those veritable scene-stealers JT Walsh and M Emmet Walsh in the supporting cast.

  • Inferior remake of the 1952 film, with little sense of suspense.
