Six films starring the late screen icon, Natalie Wood. Warren Beatty made his screen debut opposite Wood in 'Splendor in the Grass' (1961), a tale of adolescent love gone awry directed by Elia Kazan. Set in depression-era Kansas in 1925, the film tells the story of two teenage lovers full of angst and lust whose relationship is quashed by the repressive mentality of their parents and the local townspeople - with dire consequences. Helen Gurley Brown's self-help best-seller was the nominal source for the Hollywood sex comedy 'Sex and the Single Girl' (1964), starring Tony Curtis as a scandal sheet editor attempting to dish the dirt on research psychologist and author Helen Gurley Brown (Wood). Needless to say, a romantic entanglement ensues. Set in 1930s Hollywood, 'Inside Daisy Clover' (1965) follows 15-year-old tomboy Daisy Clover (Wood) as she becomes a big movie star overnight following a successful audition. Daisy must now struggle to overcome the many difficulties that come along with her fame and fortune. Robert Redford co-stars as Daisy's secretly gay movie star husband. The Jule Styne/Stephen Sondheim musical 'Gypsy' (1962) follows the life and times of burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee (Wood). Rosalind Russell co-stars as the pushy stage mother who forces her daughter into the limelight at a tender age. 'Bombers B-52' (1957) is a romantic drama set in the world of the US air force. Lois Brennan (Wood), daughter of Sergeant Chuck Brennan (Karl Malden), falls in love with hotshot playboy Colonel Jim Herlihy (Efrem Zimbalist Jr) - much to the chagrin of her father, who witnessed Herlihy's dangerous hotheadedness first-hand when both men were stationed in Korea. The romantic comedy 'Cash McCall' (1960) tells the story of the eponymous Cash (James Garner), a slick up-and-coming businessman who makes his fortune by buying ailing enterprises before re-selling them at a profit. But Cash more than meets his match when he comes up against Lory (Wood), the beautiful daughter of failing plastics tycoon Grant Austen (Dean Jagger).

The only thing that gets a good pumping in Kazan's melodramatic and excellent study of sexual repression and hypocrisy in small town America is the oil in the ground, producing disfunctional relationships, missed opportunities and neurosis a-plenty. Excellent, intelligent film making with Natalie Wood outstanding.

B 52 is definitely a great movie to watch. I just loved it! I did not see the time go by. Truly a masterpiece. I enjoyed seeing Karl Malden on the silver screen again. He was magnificent as ever. He has been one of my favorite actors since I first saw him in 'The streets of San Francisco'. Nathalie Wood was equally great. I look forward to seeing her again in the near future.

Each one a classic piece of cinema history, ranging between comedy to melodrama, 10/10, Natalie Wood does not disappoint in any role undertaken.

Another gem from Kazan. Natalie Wood quite brilliant. Echoes of East of Eden - what more could you ask for in a film!

Splendor: not very collectable

This view of teen and family relationships is not very interesting to watch now. The kids are played by 20 something actors too old for their parts and the actors playing the parents never get beyond cardboard stereotypes. We are also presented with a view of young womanhood which may have pertained in the 1920's but looks like objectionable misogyny today. Elia Kazan's direction, as seems usual from this man, is crude and lacking in depth and insight. It has to be said that the film looks good in colour. Rent only if you are interested in Wood and Beatty (in his first screen role).
