So solemn, so stylised, so much cigarette smoke
By Rehan (127 reviews) from London , 25 Aug 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
Mon dieux, les Français! Can they really be as stagey, as exaggerated, as camp as theyre routinely depicted (by themselves)? Hollow-cheeked collagen-lipped mascara-ed beauties who move like Lipizzaners; elegant moody women dun certain age, a gynaecologist to boot in this case; a man considered handsome and well-built played by Depardieu -! Is there no limit to clichés? Evidently not.
This film would make a fantastic French & Saunders skit. Heres an example from the portentous voiceover: I lay there alone, naked in the room. I dozed, then had a drink. I was thirsty.
If youre in the mood for some chic and improbable tosh it may suit, otherwise there are better ways to spend an hour and a half.- Was this review helpful to you?

(72)Typically pretentious and ponderous French fare.
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 11 Mar 2013French film with sub titles. A wife sets up her serial philandering husband with a prostitute and then forms a friendship with the prostitute in order to hear about the encounters. Typical slow, ponderous and pedantic and pretentious French film. Unnecessarily long and strung out. Not even particularly erotic.- Was this review helpful to you?

Stimulating study of desire and jealousy
By a customer , 14 Feb 2013It's a pleasing surprise to see Gerard Depardieu taking a back seat in what is essentially a two-hander for the ladies. He plays Bernard, a businessman whose wife, Catherine, suspects of infidelity. According to the subtitles, he acknowledges having had certain dalliances but insists they meant nothing. She becomes determined to prove his desire for betrayal, and hires a beautiful escort, Nathalie, as a honeytrap. Soon the affair takes on a life of its own. Fanny Ardent and Emmanuelle Beart both manage to be fascinatingly beautiful and inscrutable. A very French film, stylish and sophisticated, but if the denouement was meant to be a shock...sorry, we all saw it coming long before the end. Guaranteed to get you talking.- Was this review helpful to you?

Graceful, tantalising and sweet
By Anniegetyogun (116 reviews) from Down South , 18 Mar 2011The lead three actors are well cast and credible. I found it touching with an offbeat subject. You never quite know what the subtext is and where the story will move next but its compelling to watch. Lovely, really enjoyable.- Was this review helpful to you?
