As in Comment J'ai Tué Mon Père, director Anne Fontaine here explores the damage that a misconception can do to a relationship. This is a stylish study of sexual manners in which middle-aged gynaecologist Fanny Ardant pays sex-club hostess Emmanuelle Béart to lure her errant husband (Gérard Depardieu) into an affair. Ardant is motivated by revenge for a casual fling and meets Béart after each of the encounters with her husband for an explicit recounting of events. Mon dieux, les Français! Can they really be as stagey, as exaggerated, as camp as theyre routinely depicted (by themselves)? Hollow-cheeked collagen-lipped mascara-ed beauties who move like Lipizzaners; elegant moody women dun certain age, a gynaecologist to boot in this case; a man considered handsome and well-built played by Depardieu -! Is there no limit to clichés? Evidently not.
This film would make a fantastic French & Saunders skit. Heres an example from the portentous voiceover: I lay there alone, naked in the room. I dozed, then had a drink. I was thirsty.
If youre in the mood for some chic and improbable tosh it may suit, otherwise there are better ways to spend an hour and a half.
