In Kathryn Bigelow's tale of vampires in the American Southwest, the creatures of the night aren't elegant, cloaked aristocrats. They're a gun-toting gang that dresses and acts like a motorcycle gang. Caleb (Adrian Pasdar), a restless young man from a small farm town, meets an alluring drifter named Mae (Jenny Wright). She reveals herself to be a vampire, who turns Caleb into one of her kind rather than kill him. But the rest of her family is slow to accept the newcomer. The ancient leader, Jesse (Lance Henriksen), and his psychotic henchman Severen (Bill Paxton) lay down the law; Caleb has to carry his own weight or die. However, he can't bring himself to kill. He manages to win the gang's approval when he rescues them from certain death in a daytime gunfight during a spectacular motel shoot-out in which every bullet hole lets in a deadly ray of sunlight. When the vampires threaten Caleb's real family, he's forced to choose between life and death. The film avoids the complex vampire mythology of such films as Interview with the Vampire. Instead, it emphasizes the intense, seductive bond that forms between Caleb and the violent but tightly knit gang. Bigelow would later utilize this powerful dramatic device in her 1991 film Point Break.~ Jonathan E. Laxamana, All Movie Guide

This 1980s horror landmark — an undead revamp of Bonnie and Clyde — is one of the best vampire movies ever made. Adrian Pasdar stars as the luckless farm boy inducted by seductive Jenny Wright into her itinerant family of gangster bloodsuckers, who manage to keep one step ahead of the law and daylight. Director Kathryn Bigelow blends the road movie, the western and the horror genres into one visually stunning and frightening package, spinning a genuinely scary tale that slickly examines the violent lifestyle of the outlaw gang. Along for the ride are Lance Henriksen and Bill Paxton, who give standout degenerate performances.
"...NEAR DARK achieves a new look in vampire films. High-powered but pared down, slick but spare, this is something akin to THE BADLANDS of the supernatural..."
80's gak i'm afraid, terrible acting, unbelievably cliched plot, a waste of time. The ending is hilarious though, utterly ridiculous.......i'd rather set myself on fire.
The film has a great concept; a twist on the usual vampire story, bring it to a modern day, mid-west set, layering the plot with old and new ideas.
However good the concept, the delivery is sooo poor. The storyline is disjointed, some of the acting is timid to say the least and the execution of the final scene is so unbelievable it makes you wonder did the writers/producers just give up?
Overall a real shame, the basic premise for the film had the potential of cult status on a par with 'The Lost Boys', but the execution was ham fisted without control of continunity.
Film of the year so far! Imagine, say, My Life as a Dog, Ratcatcher, or even 400 Blows, one of those bittersweet portraits of lonely children bumping up against the hard knocks of parental neglect, abuse and poverty. Cross that kind of acute honesty and naturalism with an edgy near-the-knuckle horror movie – Near Dark, for instance, or Ringu. Now set this intriguing mutation in the suburbs of Stockholm during the depths of a Swedish winter. Let the Right One In is that movie, and it’ Read more
