Having read the book, I was looking forward to the good story which I knew was coming. People often dismiss Stephen King as a horror writer when he is primarily a master story teller. They often forget (or don't even know) that Shawshank, Stand By Me and Green Mile were all the products of his imagination, some say twisted, I say brilliant and absorbing. Needful Things could never match up to those films, but is still worth a watch.
It is full of action and never slow or boring so in that respect could be said to be gripping. Ed Harris is a strong lead and always gives a screen prescence. I think that they missed out some of the best parts of the story, but still shows how arbitary trivial misdemeanors can end cause serious but mindless conflict and violence. Give it a try.
