The American censors were appalled when Herbert Wilcox's bawdy historical drama about Charles II's mistress was presented to them. In addition to 35 cuts, they suggested that a much more suitable ending would be to have Nell marry the king! A box-office smash in this country, the film benefits from a script by Miles Malleson (who also appears) that took much of its dialogue from Samuel Pepys's famous diary. Cedric Hardwicke has a rare old time as Charles, but Anna Neagle is just a touch too refined as Nell and comes off second best in her court intrigues with Jeanne de Casalis as the Duchess of Portsmouth.
Naïve, vivid account of a famous couple; physically cheap and rather faded, but the best film on the subject and one of the best covering this period.
The film was amusing but as it is so dated it didn't really make for particularly brilliant entertainment when we sat down to watch it on a Friday night.
It was good for about 30 mins then we switched to Charlie's Angels. No doubt a lot less worthy but considerably more entertaining.
I'm sure it was a top film in its day and it maintains all the charm, wit and character of the time. In fact for its time its quite saucy and Anna Neagle is a real hoot.
