Piloted by a special team of young warriors, these giant bio-mechanical humanoids are the only thing that can withstand the force of the Angel's defense field long enough for the pilots to tackle the massive invaders in brutal hand-to-hand combat! At the same time, NERV struggles to pierce the veil of mystery surrounding the enigmatic Angels...

Many people will outright reject animated films simply because they are 'cartoons'. This is a bit of a disappointment, as the story in this series is unlike no other, and certainly isn't for children.
It may be a bit much for some people though, as it really does throw you in at the deep end of the story. Very gradually is the full plot revealed, and those weaned on high-octane fast paced storylines may find themselves getting a bit bored.
This may be alleviated by the excellent epic fight scenes between the gargantuan beasts, and those that do have patience will be rewarded with the excellent, consistent world crafted by the shows creator Hideaki Anno.
Unfortunately this is likely to be overlooked by most, except fans of the anime genre. However if you like your stories deep, interesting and very original, give it a try. Even if you think animated or subtitled films are stupid, you may be pleasantly surprised.
I watched the first disc after hearing a lot about this series and was pretty disappointed, it just seemed to be run of the mill stuff : average animation, not a particularly great plot, unimpressive fight scenes, execrable music etc. I am going to give it chance however because according to the previous reviewer and others it turns out to be great so I I'll order the next disc and see.
