A good political message but otherwise substandardBy supershari from Middlesex , 05 Feb 2005
[Highly rated reviewer]When New Jack City first hit the cinemas in 1991 it was hailed as a beacon of light illuminating for everyone the injustices occurring in poor predominately black neighbourhoods in America. Politically it tried to make a good point and it was helped significantly by its Rap affiliations, not only in the soundtrack but also via its lead stars such as Ice T.
Looking back in hindsight, this film looks very dated and when we look beyond all the hype, the script and direction are both laughably substandard. I would call the Director, Mario Van Peebles, a one hit wonder, but this film is so poorly cut, the cinematography so hideous, the story so unrealistic, and the characters so cardboard-cut-out, that calling it a wonder is to do injustice to the action/crime/blaxploitation genre as a whole. I draw your attention to far more mature works such as Spike Lees Do the Right Thing (1989) and Jungle Fever (1991) and Malcolm X (1992) and notably John Singletons, Boys in The Hood, also from 1991 as being far better examples of the genre.

Wesleys finest moment.By Jacksonbear from Scotland , 22 Jun 2006This is one entertaining movie which dared to show the realism of the American inner city in the early 1990`s.In much the same genre as scarface it ticks along at a faster pace with an outstanding performance by Snipes and Ice T.The soundtrack is superb.Definately one for the collection.
WESLEY SNIPES AT HIS BESTBy a customer from BROADSTAIRS,KENT , 03 Mar 2006GREAT STORY,GREAT MUSIC AND GREAT CAST.
MAKES THIS FILM ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAV'S.A MUST WATCH FILM IF YOU LIKE GANGSTER MOVIES.
A good gritty crime thrillerBy Colin Hamilton from Dollar, Scotland , 20 Feb 2006Set in New York this film gives a great insight into life in the poorer districts. The main characters start a new drugs cartel and try to do it without the Mob. This leads to some dissagreement between the groups. In the middle of this dispute the Police dept try to maintain some law and order with limited success.
The film keeps your attention throughout as you watch how each character's story unfold.
Well worth watching.
Good old school gangsta flickBy Smoothy Smooth from Essex , 14 Jul 2005When I was first told about this film by a freind of mine I thought it wasn't going to be any good-especially when I heard Ice-T was in it! But I was proven wrong, this is a kick-ass gangsta flick which also brings home some of the realities of dealing drugs on the street. Yes Drugs is a mugs game where real lives are lost and real people get hurt. Of course it has to be entertaining so some of it may not reflect reality all the time-but at least it doesn't glamourise it too much! Wesley Snipes is at his old school best in this!!!
Classic Gangsta!By andyking from Kent , 27 Mar 2005Great when it was made, and still first class today - with a soundtrack that any film would be happy to have. One of the few films made I could ever watch more than once and still enjoy.
7 from me!
