My mother sent me this video on VHS from America. I have some physical limitations due to a car accident that was very bad when I was 19 and I have several pins and rods that limit my movement. This is one of the best exercise tapes I have ever used. It always takes it slow and easy, the conditioning is unbeatable and the exercises are all strengthening, toning, and graceful. Doing this tape will not only make you have the body of a star, but it will teach you grace and give you excellent posture. Just watching it is almost hypnotic and the classical musical selections are tasteful and suitable for the exercises, helping you to control your breathing and keep in time. The music is calming and soothing, so the exercises are not stressful. The actual director of the NYC Ballet narrates you through every exercise. The best thing about this tape is ANYone can use it, men and women, children, and 40's to 60's -with disabilities or limitations as well. Just follow what you can and rest when you need to. It has some male and female dancers showing you how to do the exercises and working along with you, each of them students with the NYC Ballet. A rare gem among workout videos. This should be a professional video-conducted class at everyone's local gym.

Was quite disappointed as the dvd did not work past the 3rd warm up. I would try again, it looked interesting.

I enjoyed the Vol 1 of New York City ballet. Although almost the same as Vol1, I got bored with Vol 2.

  • Aesthetic but difficult

Beautiful, strong male and female bodies, beautiful classical music, a pleasant calm male voice giving instructions... this makes a welcome change from the celebrities surrounded by stick insects moving frantically to synthetic music.

Aesthetically, this is a wonderful DVD, refreshingly different. The workout is good, too, with emphasise on working the legs.

However, it is not suitable for everyone. If you're new to exercise, you probably won't be able to follow the programme. Even if you're exercising regularly, you may find this goes beyond your abilities. The performers are, after all, movement professionals. This is their training routine. It's probably not suitable for you unless you're young, above average strong, and far above average flexible. You definitely need to be very experienced at stretching.

You also need previous ballet knowledge. The instructions are given in ballet jargon. Unless you've taken ballet classes, these won't make much sense. (You can watch the DVD several times with a dictionary in your hand, and gradually puzzle out what those terms mean).

Summary: highly aesthetic, but suitable only for fit, flexible exercisers with ballet experience.

I have given this one star, purley because i enjoyed the music. unless you have a living room the size of a dance studio don't bother, because thats the amount of space you will need to be able to carry out any of the routines!

  • Difficult

I found this workout far too difficult, as I had no idea what any of the moves are. They made no attempt to explain what the terms were or how to do the exercises, so you have to just try and follow what the dancers are doing. The exercises are very good and you can see the muscles working when you watch the dancers, but sadly even being of average fitness and able to follow most dance workouts, I just wasn't bendy enough to do the splits or pull my legs up to my ears!
