This attractive vehicle for radio star Henry Morgan was an early effort from Richard Fleischer, whose career would embrace The Vikings, Compulsion and 10 Rillington Place, among others. This is based on Ring Lardner's autobiographical novel The Big Town, but Lardner's recollections, once transferred to film, are so good-natured they ultimately become tiresome. Still, there's no denying young Fleischer's talent behind the camera, and film buffs should note that this was also Hollywood legend Stanley Kramer's first producer credit.
A clever recreation of the big band era, hampered by gross overlength, unattractive characters and a pessimistic plot.
Back in 1977 following the blood dripping noir of Taxi Driver with a revisionary musical seemed like a VERY BAD IDEA and consequently the cinemas stayed empty for this one. Indeed 2 and a half hours of a LIza Minelli musical is a scary prospect indeed - until you see the film.
New York, New York is a moving drama about two people doomed to never be able to love each other enough. For a musical this is surprisingly raw and Scorsese picks at the Hollywood cliche to find a darker subtext and the raw meat of human emotion.
Indulgent and long? Yes. But also quite brilliant and an unjustly overlooked work from Scorsese
First saw this film years ago when I was a huge fan of everthing Robert de Niro and Scorcese did together. The relationship between de Niro and Minelli works well, the music was superb, the costumes and settings were fabulous and it felt like a genuine 4os/50s musical,
