      Don't be put off because it's a musical - it's a cool movie!

If you're not a fan of musicals, don't be put off from watching this because it's a 'musical'. Yes, it has great music and singing, but it is not a conventional musical. It also has great acting and great directing, and a good believable story. The central characters, played by Robert DeNiro and Liza Minelli, meet as WWII ends, and the story follows the lives of this musical pair. He is a cool, but cocky, jazz saxophonist, she is a sweet, unassuming, but very talented band singer. They fall in love and join a touring jazz/swing band, but their life on the road together has many ups and downs. DeNiro and Minelli are perfect in their roles, and the supporting cast cannot be faulted. The direction of Martin Scorsese is brilliant, with great attention to detail and character development. Be sure to watch the long version to see Minelli's tour de force near the end of the movie as the usherette who becomes a huge star in the musicals. This actually is an aside from the main story, but has to be seen because her performance in this part of the movie is stunning, reminiscent indeed of her mother Judy Garland. A very entertaining movie, although with a slightly sad but inevitable ending. It transports you so realistically to that bright and expectant post WWII era, when the world was starting anew and there was so much to look forward to, and when jazz and swing music was so cool.... read more »
