Critic-turned-director Peter Bogdanovich intended this tribute to the early days of film-making to be his masterwork, but it turned out to be one of his biggest flops. Ryan O'Neal plays the director, Burt Reynolds the handsome star, Stella Stevens a vamp and Brian Keith a fledgeling movie mogul. It was a critical and commercial disaster and it's certainly no masterpiece, but it's still a charmer, with nice performances and impeccable period atmosphere. Bogdanovich's travails with Nickelodeon were neatly satirised in Irreconcilable Differences, in which O'Neal plays a victim of the Hollywood system.

Also, I was interested to see a movie on the beginnings of cinema.
Well, apart from promising titles, not enough materialised. More-or-less conventional love story, too few insights of the building of the cinema industry.
There were some fun scenes showing life of these pioneers, but all in all, it left me longing for more.
