For the first 80 minutes or so this is classic if not THE classic film noir- about a dreamer in the London post war criminal underground who still fancies his chances of getting rich quick despite innumerable setbacks. Effectively the film documents his final descent partially due to events over which he has no control. Unfortunately the ending in this release which is the US cut involves too many unexplained coincidences & greatly weakened the film for me.

One of the extras is a discussion of the difference between the UK & US versions- the British release was longer, had a different music score & explained some but by no means all of the final sequence which otherwise strikes one as a series of plot holes. But it is the US version released on the DVD in its entirety & that which has to be reviewed.

Couldn't they have included both?
