  • a classic piece of film making...

    [Highly rated reviewer]

This is a damn good bit of film making, there's no flashy camera tricks or shock revelations and twists, its simply about the growth of a young D.A. breaking into the profession. I'd say if ur a fan of 'Serpico', 'Glen Garry, Glen Ross' or 'Big Night' then this is well worth checking out.

Its a classic piece of film making with a strong story, good script, finely ballanced cast, and some brilliant performances.

  • It's in the acting

Having recently viewed a number of Sidney Lumet’s films the one thing they all have in common is strong acting performances of the best sort: natural and un-forced. I am sure this comes from a process of thorough rehearsal resulting in the actors being completely comfortable in scenes that are often difficult. This is not one of Lumet’s best films but it is still worth watching if you are interested in the art of the actor. Actually, it’s not a bad example of the thriller set in New York (almost a sub-genre of its own).

There were good things about it, like the cast, but all in all I found it rather static.

  • what an odd film

this film can't seem to make up its mind what it is. starts off as a farcical comedy, then becomes a courtroom drama, then a sort of bent-cop-corruption-ethics tale, with some romance tacked on for good measure. a little odd. having said that, i did enjoy it, just don't expect consistency. consistency is the last thing you should expect from this (film).

  • An Interesting Film

Not a classic by any means but an interesting study of the duality of life, the intricacies of loyalty and what really happens in the world.

This is a slowly paced intense film which leads you in many different directions, subtly making you think and change your perceptions as the drama unfolds.

If you like to be blown away by films then this isn't for you. For any films fans out there this is an interesting one to watch, for the good performances and the unusual story.

Ultimately I think this is a film for the purists because it never quite hits the heights, but interesting nonetheless.
