Based on the M.R. James short story ‘Casting the Runes,’ Jacques Tourneur's film is considered to be one of the true classics of the horror genre, relying heavily on the power of suggestion to create a heavy atmosphere of fear and dread. The famous, much-debated monster was added by the studio against Tourneur's wishes.

This remains for me one of the finest 'horror' films of all time. Not horror in the contemporary sense - no special effects as such, no gore - genuine spine-tingling suspense with a sense of real evil. Based on the MR James story 'Casting Of The Runes' (as is the Ring Cycle), Jacques Tournier delivers a true classic of the genre - sorry, it's in black and white and there is a 'bad' monster in the form of the demon of the title; this was included by the studio against the director's wishes and features prominently on all the film's publicity, giving it the appearance of a typical '50s 'B' movie which it isn't. Both the US and UK versions are included on the DVD release - not a great deal of difference between the two - more of the tacky demon on the stateside version. This was one of the first DVDs I purchased from the states some years ago and it's a sin that it hasn't been released here yet. When it is, if you're a classic horror flick fan, then rent it and or purchase it - you won't be disappointed.
Classic british horror thriller (with partly American cast). Crowley type baddie tries to get the hero but gets his come-uppance instead. Runes and Magick abound...
