A mesmerising cinematic masterpiece

Somehow it seems that Jim Jarmush tried to make life difficult for himself when he created this unusual film. Five Taxis in five different cities during a single night are the background for five very different short films. Yet despite having to draw the viewer in each time I was literally glued to screen from the very first minute in every single episode. Each of these could have been a prize winner in the short film category of any film festival in the world but it is the combination that makes this film so special. I will not tell you any of the storylines as it would spoil the viewing experience but the line-up of great actors from around the world is already impressive: Winona Ryder, Gena Rowlands, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Beatrice Dalle, Roberto Benigni etc. Add to this a cool Tom Waits soundtrack that captures the essence of the movie and you will understand why this is a winner.
My only criticism is the actual DVD as it contains no extras whatsoever. The film is so outstanding that I would have liked a little more background information but apart from 'Play Movie' and 'Scene Selection' there is nothing else on this DVD. What a pity!

Quirky, funny, sad, hysterical (particularly if you love Benigni and understand Italian)... a rollercoaster of emotions to accompany the five taxi rides taking place across the globe. I loved it. Funny, Poignant, Sad and Charming
By JayLow (122 reviews) , 03 Jun 2012This is life as seen through the idosyncratic lens of Jim Jarmusch and represented by five taxi journeys in five different cites on the same night.
Each vignette has a story to tell - and each story reflects the nature of the particular city we find ourselves in.
There are some fantatic performances - Gena Rowlands in particular - and the photography is great.

Patchy, but worthwhile
By a customer , 19 Mar 2012It's a bit hit and miss, this. Of the five vignettes, one is excellent, one is good, one is okay, one's a bit 'meh', and one was downright awful.

Random life perspectives crashing head-on into each other
By DiscerningViewer (4 reviews) , 30 Jan 2012Be patient, this film delivers the more you persevere. The five stories each examine the human condition by contrasting mindsets and life expectations of passengers and drivers.
This is a good jumping in point for those new to Jim Jarmusch, although my favorite is still 'Down By Law'.
Most reviews rate the fifth Finnish story the best, but for me Roberto Benigni steals the whole film in the hilarious fourth Rome story. The third Paris story is also very enjoyable with great acting all round, especially from the driver. The two USA episodes are slower paced but with some clever one-liners and touches, such as Winona Ryder using the Yellow Pages as a seat cushion.
The characters are fairly believable, as though Jarmusch has been taking notes on his personal travels and basing the drivers and some passengers on actual people. Having travelled a lot myself I was reminded of hair-raising taxi rides in Italy and encounters with morose and spectacularly drunken Finns. Sometimes the national stereotypes are accurate even if they are only based on an eye-catching minority.- Was this review helpful to you?

Fun in confined space.

Don't panic, don't let that put you off. I don't speak, read or write Brooklyn and I managed ok.
Brilliantly written and brilliantly acted throughout, this is a strange and episodic film which is uniquely entertaining and challenging by turns.
I'm sure film students all over the world will be discussing it for decades to come. Me? It bowled me over and carried me along.- Was this review helpful to you?
