Reminiscent of Gaslight, this thriller stars Elizabeth Taylor as a woman recovering from a nervous breakdown who thinks she sees a corpse outside her window. Could it be the work of her husband (Laurence Harvey in his final film), who may or may not be having an affair with her best friend (Billie Whitelaw)? The actors give the tired plot all they've got, but director Brian G Hutton (Where Eagles Dare, Kelly's Heroes) is more concerned with action than atmosphere, abbreviating tension where it should be given time to accumulate.

Mind-blowing...spectacular, imaginative and memorable... set to become a massive cult hit
A fun and imaginative movie along the lines of Constantine and Blade (but not as reliant on special effects), telling the story of a truce between the forces of light and dark policed on either side by the Night and Day Watches. Part of the appeal comes from the mundane and workmanlike way that both sides go about their jobs, frustating each other in petty bureaucratic ways. A good start to the trilogy.
Modern-day sfx-enhanced demon hunting. There seems to be too much going on for its own good at times, but it is the first of a trilogy so will hopefully make more sense when the others are released. It has several exciting sequences and looks good - you just can't have enough rocket-powered somersaulting trucks if you ask me - and probably is not what you expect from the land best known for grey films about bread queues. Expect the announcement of the hollywood remake; it's bound to happen. (Note - this review was based on the original Russian disc and I don't know if the rental DVD will be subbed, dubbed or both.)
I have been looking forward to this for weeks. Start was intriguing if a bit chaotic. I waited for it to start to fall into place, but it just de-generated into a sub-standard pastiche which I might have enjoyed when I was 12.
Do not bother wasting your energy over.
one of worst films ever made wish i never rented this one.
This film has actually been around for a couple of years - you can even get a legal Russian DVD release that has English subtitles.
The film begins with a battle between light and dark. Evenly matched, they set up groups to monitor each other (this film focusses on the Night Watch who monitor the dark forces). But one day someone will come who will choose between light and dark and win the day for that side...and so we get to the present day where Anton encounters the Night Watch while trying to use a witch for nefarious purposes.
Sometime later he is one of the Night Watch - and encounters an apocalyptic situation while tracking down vampires.
Visually interesting, but in terms of story I was unsurprised to find out this was adapted from a series of books. Unlike many adaptations of late - LOTR, Serenity - I think, for this one, you DO need to have read the books. There are too many jumps, and parts that simply don't make sense - so I assume the books cover these.
But overall, enjoyable. Perhaps it will improve over the next 2 parts?
Sorry the spider doll disappeared so soon though. Reminded me of The Thing!

The opening 30 minutes made me believe all the hype about this movie, laying the seed of what could have been a fantastic story. Unfortunately as the movie goes on the plot begins to thin, becoming less and less interesting. By the end, the special effects become tiresome and you couldnt care less about the characters. Shame, could have been a really good movie.
This is a superb film. Unfortunately, this is a dreadful edit of it. For international release, Fox have added in some extra bits of prologue and explanation (which is great), but they've cut two huge segments and the result is an incoherent mess. One of the major sub-plots is pretty much removed, apart from one shot which just seems out of place, and the entire denouement of one of the major climaxes is taken out. If you can track down the original Russian release, it's very worth watching for its great story, fantastic FX, and unusual location, but this version is a big disappointment.
Ignore the bad press about this film, as with anything that is'nt out of the blockbuster hollywood market often critics don't give credit where credit is due. Acting, Special Effects, Storyline all give rivalry to Films such as Van Helsing and the like. As the first of a triolgy it certainly a good example to prove not only Hollywood can make a film thats worth viewing. The director has a nack for running several threads of the storyline at the same time, requiring the upmost attention by the viewer to keep a keen eye on what is happening in each thread to understand the inctricity of the full plot.
This is a confusing muddle of junk. Absolute pants of the highest order. It has been added to my top ten crappest films I have ever seen. Amateurish to the extreme, poorly edited, rubbish acting, silly story, ooooohhhh so bad!!
Originally saw this in the cinema its a top film with great special effects. But one thing that set it apart were the subtitles which added to the experience. This DVD looks like it does not contain these subtitles despite hunting around the menu for 15 mins, so I ended up watching the dubbed version. Shame really.
didn't finish this one so hard to be totally objective, first 20 minutes bored me so much my wife was even looking at me with a glint in her eye...so it must have been bad. couldn't follow the confused and jumbled plot at all and the
effects while good couldn't hold the attention...my advice get out shooter
