Crackling pulp noir
By Melon from East Sussex , 18 Dec 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a great little dark gem that has been 'lost' for years. It was Power's pet project and by far his finest role. It all revolves around how low a man can sink, before he becomes a carnival 'geek' - the lowest of the low, a drunk who bites the heads of live chickens for a bottle a day. Geeks aren't born, they're made, and the story details Stanton Carlyle's position as exploiter then exploited. Great stuff, just a pity that a lot of the original story had to be cut to get past the censors of the day.- Was this review helpful to you?

(9)intriguing mish-mash
By itstinks (681 reviews) from North of Reading , 06 Dec 2010A con-man wants to make money through the gullibility of those who believe in psychic and medium powers.
He is prepared to push other people aside on the way and make alliances where it suits him to achieve his end.
Although the tone is supposed to be dark and there are elements of Elmer Gantry and A Face in the Crowd, I found Tyrone Power to be fairly one-note despite the highs and lows.
Interesting film if slightly over-long.- Was this review helpful to you?

Intriguing Melodrama
By Cato (703 reviews) from Lydbury North , 29 Jul 2010A very interesting film, in that it sounded like it was lucky to have been made at all at a time when the bosses at Hollywood ruled with a highly censorious rod of iron. Tyrone Power gives the greatest performance of his career in this tragic tale of a clever but highly manipulative man and his quasi Faustian descent. The rest of the cast really play it hard in a film that ought by now to be given cult status.- Was this review helpful to you?

Strange film
By Pinkmat (205 reviews) from Exeter , 28 Apr 2010This is a strange film but quite compelling. Such a film wouldn't be made these days. The acting is good but quite often when films are set in a fairground there's a bit of weirdness so expect a bit. However, it holds interest. I'd question it's film noire billing though.- Was this review helpful to you?

A real classic
By a customer from Preston , 12 Nov 2008The rather predictable zany fairground scenario in the early stages did not bode well - then, wham, a mesmerizing experience.- Was this review helpful to you?
