Anyone considering renting 'Nixon' presumably wants to know more about Richard Nixon; and most people, even those in the UK, will go into the film already knowing something about him.

Most people will be familiar with Watergate; some people will know about Nixon's diplomatic involvement with China; and others may be aware of his very narrow defeat to JFK in the 1960 presidential election. So, the question is: does the audience know Nixon any better after having watched 'Nixon'? The probable answer is that they'll know more about his life, but will be left slightly in the dark about his soul, his personality, and his place in history.

Oliver Stone tries very hard to make a film that serves as both an historical analysis and a gripping drama. In part, he succeeds; in part, he fails. There is much, historically speaking, that is interesting here, the Cuban facet in particular; but there is also a feeling that much has been left out. Where, for instance, is Nixon's life after Watergate? And while 'Nixon' is, as a drama, initially very compelling (not least because Hopkins is excellent in the part), it is also far, far too long.

The vertiginous camera-angles and shifting film-stocks look great for the first hour or so, but eventually they become another aspect of the film that seems to be masking the truth rather than helping to reveal it.

Rent it, but rent a classic like 'Patton' at the same time, just in case 'Nixon' disappoints.

I have long been interested in this period of American history and found this fascinating. Despite the long running time I was gripped throughout. The inferences about the JFK assassination and how accurate a portrayal of Nixon`s inner motivations and character this is, not entirely convinced. Still worth seeing.

It is a good movie but it can only be interested to a limited number of viewers. One must know and understand well American politics in the 60's and 70's to appreciate it in full. If you do, then it is a fantastic movie showing the dark side of Nixon. If you don't, do not waste your time because you would not understand Nixon's actions and policies towards China, the Watergate, among other things. Anthony Hopkins portrays well Nixon and his tantrums. To all the Hopkins fan, seeing him on the screen is not enough to appreciate this movie. Remember, US politics is the key word for three long hours of amazement and shocking moments of Nixon's youth and as a politician.

  • Essential viewing - if you want to know the dark

    Rated - 3.5 stars

An essential viewing and thinking event for any serious student of the dark places of the 20th Century. This over long and strangely sympathetic (in places) film of a complex and driven man shows just how weird power can be. Nixon is not adequately served by the movie but we do get a sense that the USA got the man it probably deserved. Saggy and chaotic for the sake of art rather than narrative, the film bumps and dodges between episodes in the life of this tortured and torturing man. The story is known but not known enough one feels.

I felt intrigued by his psychology, appalled by a system which could promote such a person and amazed that the deeds in the end seemed forgiven. The movie seems to say: 'ends justify means' .. or almost. Surely not?

Nixon is a very polished film from Oliver Stone.

Anthony Hopkins sizzles in role of the American

President from California, not bad for a boy

    from the valley's of Wales.

The historical value of film seems to be pretty

accuarte and with a bumper cast of actors

    is well worth the watch.

My opinion, well worth the rent
