Richard Gere here stars to real effect in the film that prompted critics to note how much greyer, older and better he was. There's a lot to age him in this swamp-land thriller, in which he plays a Chicago cop seeking vengeance in New Orleans following the death of his partner. Jeroen Krabbe is his crimelord target and Kim Basinger is the reluctant gangster's moll, with whom Gere takes off into the Louisiana bayous for the rousing action finale. It's predictable hokum, but director Richard Pearce spins an artful story and he's helped by Gere's slick performance.
