One of the West End's longest-ever running comic farces arrived on the screen virtually intact, but with a significantly different leading man. Whereas Michael Crawford had consolidated both career and image by instigating the gawky, inadvertent gauche lead on stage, in the film the role went to the diminutive British comedian Ronnie Corbett, changing the nature of the part to fit a precreated comic persona. Corbett does well by the hackneyed plot, and under-rated director Cliff Owen (The Wrong Arm of the Law, Ooh You Are Awful...) keeps up the pace. Interest today resides in watching a wonderfully Technicolored 1970s London, and sterling support from the likes of Arthur Lowe and the wonderful Beryl Reid.
Fairly lively farce with everything from mistaken identity to falling trousers.
If you are a fan of good old british farce at its best, this is the film for you; yes it looks dated now, but it really is so hilarious! Ronnie Corbett (very young in this film!) is absolutely superb and had me rolling around in laughter together with the fantastic Arthur Lowe with his sarcastic wit as the supposedly 'whiter than white' bank manager. All in all, a fantastic british comedy!
This is a typical 'old british comedy' packed with faces from all the old classics such as Dad's Army, The Two Ronnies and more. Ronnie Corbet is the main actor in this film and had me in stitches throughout!
