Very funny black comedy
By Sector2814 (20 reviews) , 15 Jul 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
This comedy is a gem. It is from the very excellent writer Alan Bleasdale (Boys from the Black Stuff, Auf Weideseihn Pet)and Directed by Peter Smith (Le Carre's 'A Perfect Spy').
It starts slow and builds and builds. The marvellously deadpan Michael Angelis arrives to take over as the new manager of a run down night club in a frightening part of Liverpool.
He discovers it is run by criminals who are torturing the previous manager in the back room, while that same ex-manager has lined up the evening from hell in the club. A coach load of rabid Orange Lodge protestants, another full of rabid catholics (in fancy dress), and a third from a home for the 'confused' - and all of them pensioners. He has offered a (non existant) luxury cruise as first prize for the fancy dress and hired the worst entertainers imaginable.
Light blue touch paper and retire to safe distance to enjoy...- Was this review helpful to you?

AN UNMITTED DISASTER
By Burnhamite (379 reviews) from BURNHAM , 31 Jul 2011All those, from the top to the bottom in the production of this movie can gain no kudos in making what must the fiasco of the past fifty years, It certainly gives no credit to Merseyside's inhabitants and as for the story, it is rubbish from the opening to the closing titles. There is consolation however for those with hearing difficulties: NO SUB-TITLES !- Was this review helpful to you?
