Robbed of its essentially theatrical device — the comic contrast between off-stage chaos and on-stage calculation — this American adaptation of Michael Frayn's West End play provides more than enough laughs to skim over the potholes of improbability. Peter Bogdanovich's quick-fire direction is matched and aided by some wondrously staccato performances, notably from Carol Burnett, Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve. Luvvies at play have never been so pompously vulnerable or so sympathetic.
Brave though misguided attempt to transfer to the screen an intensely theatrical work, depending on live performance for its effect. It begins well but soon ceases to amuse.
Big names, big Laughs, that's what you get with Noises Off! A great collection of talent deliver some cracking humour in this comedy set in a broadway theatre. The comedy comes at a steady pace and you'll find yourself laughing from start to finish. . .
I really enjoyed this film, and was nicely surprised by the depth of acting from all the cast. The frantic rehersals for a play, and the cast's relationships, problems all turn the situation into a classic farce. Its done with great energy and verve by all involved. You need to concentrate to catch all the humour both verbal and visual.
I especially liked the late (RIP) Christopher Reeve who gives a startling performance, and shows a side to his acting which I didn't know he had. You can clearly see the bumbling "Clark Kent" in his performance.
So overall well worth renting. Recommended.
